Roessing Research and Development

RRD is a research and development sme in the area of rehabilitation technology and telemedicine with strong formalized links to one of the largest rehabilitation Center in the Netherlands (Roessingh Rehabilitation Center)  and the University of Twente. The mission of RRD is to carry out scientific research and contribute to its valorisation and implementation in clinical practice, by close cooperation with clinical centres and industry. Telemedicine research focuses on design, development and evaluation of innovate remotely supervised monitoring and treatment for patient with chronic musculoskeletal disorders. RRD has experience in all stages of ICT services; from initial ideas, technology development, evaluation to real implementation in clinical practice.

RRD has participated in various large national ICT projects (Awareness, Smart Surroundings, ExoZorg) and international projects (HelloDoc, New, CLEAR, IS-Active, Myotel, Navmem, HealthNavigator) concerning development of e-health applications. The role of RRD in these projects is in the design and development of the services and on setting up, organisation and validation of the trials with end users in clinical settings. RRD (prof. Hermens and prof. Vollenbroek) was project coordinator of the European projects (CREST, Seniam, Impulse and MyoTel). Within the European project NEW (5th framework) RRD was responsible for the development and demonstration of a fully ambulant remotely supervised myofeedback treatment for chronic pain patients. In the MyoTel project (eTEN 046230), a large scale European market validation was performed for this telemedicine intervention.

In the currently running regional CoCo project, coordinated by RRD, a multimodal ICT supported diseasemanagement program consisting of health status monitoring, webbased exercising, lifestyle monitoring and coaching and teleconsultation is being developed, implemented and validated for various chronic diseases like arthritis, cancer and COPD in 12 health care institutes in the region Enschede.

Roles of RRD in consortium
RRD will be the work package leader of WP2 and WP6, will be responsible for the service modules on physical functioning in WP3, will participate in WP4 were the C3PO platform will integrated and will be coordinating the evaluation and validation studies in the region Enschede.

Staff

Prof Hermie Hermens, received his masters’ degree in biomedical engineering at the UT in 1981. In 1983 he became head of the research group of the Roessingh Rehabilitation Centre. He finalised his Ph.D. in 1991 on surface Electromyography and became Professor in Biomedical Engineering, specialized in human motor control in 2001 and professor in Telemedicine in 2010. Currently, he supervises 15 Ph.D. students and several master students. He is (co)-author of over 190 peer reviewed scientific journal publications (H-index 34 P&P). Additional relevant professional functions include: Editor in chief of the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, Past-President and fellow of the int. Society of Electromyography and Kinesiology. The research focus of Hermens is the creation of innovative health care services by combining biomedical engineering with ICT. Hermens coordinated 3 European projects and participated in 15 others. He is strongly involved in many large E-Health projects at a national level (e.g. ExoZorg, Smart Surroundings, Awareness; with a budget over 5ME) as well as at an international level (e.g. ICT-Labs, HelloDoc, New, CLEAR, IS-Active, Mobiguide) related to remote monitoring and supervised training.

Lex van Velsen (PhD) has a background in communication science. He completed his PhD degree at the University of Twente with a dissertation on user-centered design for personalization. Next, he worked as a Post-Doctoral researcher at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (Bilthoven, the Netherlands) where he focused on the design and evaluation of mobile technology for infectious disease professionals and for informing the public about preventing infectious diseases. He also evaluated social media strategies. Currently Lex works as a Senior Researcher at Roessingh Research and Development at the cluster Telemedicine. His expertises include human-centered design, requirements engineering, information design, personalization, interoperability, and social media, especially focused on the eHealth domain. He has participated in and led numerous design projects in the eHealth and eGovernment domain. Finally, he was program co-chair of several (inter)national conferences on human-centered design and has published his scientific efforts in diverse leading scientific journals.

Marit Dekker-van Weering (PhD) received a MSc in the human movement sciences from the University of Groningen. She did her PhD into the development of an ambulant activity monitoring and feedback system for remotely supervised treatment of patients with chronic low back pain. Currently she is working at Roessingh Research and Development in the role of researcher. The main focus of her scientific work is on requirements, design and evaluation of telemedicine technology. She is project leader of two large Dutch projects on Telerehabilitation (Telerevalidatie.nl and Tele-Nu) were various physical telerehabilitation service modules are being developed, evaluated and implemented in 18 out of the 23 rehabilitation centres in the Netherlands.

Stephanie Jansen-Kosterink (PhD) is working as a PhD student at Roessingh Research and Development. Her PhD focuses on the use of telemedicine interventions in physical rehabilitation. In various international (MyoTel CLEAR and Playmancer) and national (CoCo) projects, on the evaluation of telemedicine services or serious gaming with rehabilitation purposes, she is engaged with the assessment and validation of the clinical trial. In 2001 she started with the study Human Movement Sciences at the VU University Amsterdam. She graduated in 2006.

Miriam Cabrita received her MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal, in October 2013. Currently she is working as a PhD student at Roessingh Research and Development. Starting with the master research, her main focus has been the personalization of ICT systems in the promotion of healthier lifestyles, mainly in the topic of physical activity. Her PhD research concerns monitoring and early detection of daily functioning decline in the elderly population.
