Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) is the oldest and largest Spanish technical university, with almost 3.500 faculty members, around 37.000 undergraduate students and 6.700 postgraduates in 21 Schools of study. UPM benefits from the heritage of its schools: the most ancient ones were founded in the 18th century. Nowadays UPM’s Schools cover most of engineering disciplines, as well as Architecture, Computer Science and Geodesy & Cartography. Moreover, UPM as a top quality academic establishment has a strong commitment to R&D and Innovation, boasting over 200 Research Units and over 17 Research Centres and Institutes, contributing significantly to the international scientific community with a high number of journal papers, conference communications, and PhD theses. The UPM researchers have large expertise in research projects participation both at national and international level.
The presence of UPM in the international R&D arena is ensured by its consistent participation in various EU programmes. As UPM participation in the 7th Framework Programme is concerned, the University has taken part in above 220 European R&D projects with more than 60 M€ of funding received from the European Commission. The UPM has been recognized as the Spanish University with the highest number of projects approved. The “Grupo de Bioingeniería y Telemedicina (GBT)”, Biomedical Engineering and Telemedicine Group (www.gbt.tfo.upm.es), is a university group that belongs to UPM, focused on the application of Information and Communication Technologies to biomedicine in the areas of education, research and technological development. GBT includes Professors, doctor researchers, PhD senior researchers and around 20 graduate students mostly from telecommunication engineering.
GBT maintains beneficial partnership with public and private sectors in its research and technological development areas. GBT collaborates with other Spanish outstanding groups in the area of information technologies applied to medicine, notably the development of disease management and pervasive health care applications of chronic and fragile individuals. GBT clinical experience accumulated along 25 years is mainly focused on: elderly and rehabilitation, diabetes, COPD, and HIV/AIDS. During the last years, GBT has participated in several European projects funded by EU Research Programs (AIM, RACE, TIDE, BRITE, Telematics Applications, ACTS, ESPRIT, IST, eTen, CIP) and by the Spanish Research Council. Some of the last relevant EU projects in which GBT has participated in the technologies and application areas of the project proposal are: “M2DM”- (IST-1999-10315, 2000-2003); “HERO” – (IST-2000-26724, 2001-2003); “INCA”- (IST-2001-37632, 2003-2005); “SIMILAR”- (FP6-507609, 2003-2007); “pEHR” (eTen 2004-2006); “CLEAR”- (ICT-PSP 224985, 2009-2011) and MobiGuide (FP7-287811).
Role in the project
The main role of UPM in PERSSILAA will be WP4 workpackage leader. UPM will focus on research activities regarding: a) Procedures and technical specifications for the PERSSILAA infrastructure; b) Integration of multiple services in the whole platform; c) Contribution to relevant standards specification and; d) Implementation of technical and semantic interoperability. UPM will also lead the development of an intelligent core in PERSSILAA, regarding definition and implementation of a decision support system. Other tasks of UPM are related to management (WP1), specification of use cases and service scenarios (WP2), specification of requirement for the integration of services (WP3), validation (WP5) and dissemination and exploitation (WP6).
María Elena Hernando, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Telemedicine at the Telecommunication Faculty of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. She is an experienced researcher in the fields of intelligent monitoring of diabetic patients, definition and evaluation of IT systems for home patient monitoring, distributed databases and mobile computing. During the last 15 years, she participated in several European Projects related to health telematics and IT in chronic care: Telemedicine (AIM A.1032), Eurodiabeta (AIM A.1019), Multimed (RACE R.1042), Epic (AIM A-2007), Inside (TIDE TP1150), TIDDM (HC-1047), M²DM (IST-1999-10315), INCA (IST2001-37632), pEHR (eTEN-2004-C510719); CLEAR (CIP-ICT-PSP 2008-2010).
Enrique J. Gómez, PhD, is a full Professor on Bioengineering and Telemedicine, Telecommunication Faculty of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Head of Bioengineering and Phot. Technology Dept. Director of the Master degree MSc on Telemedicine and Bioengineering. Secretary General of Spanish Society of Biomedical Engineering, and member council and former treasurer of European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES).
Principal Investigator of 50 Research Projects (28 funded by UE, 22 funded by Spanish national research programmes). Author and co-author of 410 scientific papers and proceedings publications He is specialised in home care technologies and chronic care management methods/technologies.
Gema García-Sáez, PhD, is a research fellow at the Telecommunication Faculty of the UPM. Her research experience is related to the design of mobile personal assistants for chronic patient’s monitoring in telemedical scenarios and the integration of knowledge management tools for personalised decision support. She has a wide experience in communication protocols with medical devices for therapy and monitoring. She has participated in 14 national projects in the field of e-health and 4 European projects (M²DM (IST-1999-10315), INCA (IST2001-37632) pEHR (eTen 2004-2006) and MobiGuide (FP7-287811).
Javier Solana Sánchez is a research fellow at the Telecommunication Faculty of the UPM. During the last years, his research experience has been focused in the cognitive tele-rehabilitation field, working in all the projects, together with FPING, related to the NeuroPersonalTrainer platform. He has a wide experience in interoperability, data mining techniques and knowledge extraction, and monitoring technologies for user interaction. He has participated in 5 national projects in the field of e-health and 2 European projects (CLEAR (CIP-ITC-PSP-2007.2.2) and BIOMed (7FP Marie Curie Actions program)).
